Fungi Foray Field Trip

Hosted by Central Oregon Mushroom Club
Friday, October 10  |  9am – 2pm
Meet at SNCO Parking Lot

Join experts on a mushroom foray through your local forest!

Explore in small, guided groups led by local, regional, and national fungi experts. Learn where to find mushrooms, how to identify them in the field, and tips for collecting and handling. Discover the rich fungal diversity around you! Your finds will help contribute to the species collection on display at the Mushroom Show during Saturday’s Fungi Fest.

Your Guides:

  • Noah Siegel - Noah is one of North America’s foremost field mycologists (mycology = the branch of biology dedicated to the study of fungi). Noah has spent over three decades seeking, photographing, identifying, and furthering his knowledge about all aspects of macrofungi. He travels and lectures extensively across America, following mushrooms from coast to coast, and has authored numerous books on the subject as well.
  • Sidnee Ober-Singleton - Sidnee works as a mycologist out of the University of Oregon who focuses on applied mycology; the various ways we can use fungi. Sidnee is especially passionate about making complex aspects of mycology digestible and accessible amongst all interested people.
  • Linda Gilpin - Central Oregon Mushroom Club President and Founding member
  • Julie Hamilton - Central Oregon Mushroom Club Founding member
  • Katie Eskledson Kaiser - SNCO Education Programs Manager
  • Kelli Anderson - SNCO Community Engagement Manager
We will carpool to a few different locations in search of these elusive treasures. We will be venturing off trail, so wear your good hiking boots! End time is variable depending on what we find and how many spots we decide to visit. Please note – you will not be foraging for edible mushrooms to take home. We will be seeking a wide variety of mushrooms, all of which will be collected for Saturday’s Fungi Fest & Mushroom Show. You will go home with the thrill of adventure, photos, and new knowledge gained – but not mushrooms in hand.

Bring with you:
  • Lunch, snack(s), and plenty of water
  • Basket or mesh bag for collecting mushrooms
  • Old toothbrush or small paintbrush for cleaning off mushrooms
  • Wear bright clothing to be visible in the forest (we will provide bright vests)
